How Much Does it Cost to Hookup a Gas Appliance?

$150 – $300

Installation of most gas appliances like a gas range, costs around $150 with the help of a plumber. Installing a vented appliance such as a gas water heater will cost roughly $300 or more on labor alone, due to the need to also make the connection to a pre-installed vent or flue.

Average Cost of Gas Appliance Hookup

The biggest factor in the cost of gas appliance installation is whether a gas line is already installed or if you have to add a gas line. This gas appliance cost estimate assumes a gas line has been installed at the appliance location and there is electricity if needed. It does not consider gas appliance costs, just installation cost.

The average cost for a plumber to install a vent-free appliance such as some free-standing gas fireplaces is about $175 for labor and materials. The cost to disconnect, remove and dispose of an existing appliance averages another $75.

The work involves removing an existing appliance, if needed, cleaning the connections, wrapping the pipe with PTFE tape to ensure a leak-free connection, securing the gas line to the appliance and testing appliance functionality. Leveling might be necessary, and if the appliance is vented, the vent will be connected. If the home uses propane, installing a conversion kit will increase the cost as discussed below.

Overview of Gas Appliance Installation

Natural Gas can be used with many different types of appliances, such as stove and ovens, clothes dryers, water heaters, fireplace inserts, gas logs and complete gas fireplaces. Some must be vented, but others operate without a vent because they burn the fuel very efficiently, so there is little carbon monoxide and other byproducts created.

Gas appliances generally use natural gas, and they are set up in the factory to burn NG. In rural areas propane is required along with a conversion kit and the installation labor needed.

This appliance installation cost estimate also includes retail costs of the supplies, a few estimates from other sites plus links to other pages of Costimates which might help you budget for the total cost of the project when other factors, such as the purchase of a gas log insert, are involved.

Gas Appliance Installation Cost Factors

How much does this common indoor project cost?

The most common range for gas appliance installation as $150 to $300. These factors will help determine where on the spectrum your price will fall – or if it might climb higher due to special circumstances.

  • Who Installs the Appliance – If you DIY, your cost will include installation supplies such as the flexible connector, pipe tape and a wrench. Costs are detailed below. In many cases you’ll be required to have the gas piping inspected, so a licensed plumber may be required in your area. Always check local code.
  • Whether a Vent is Needed – Our cost doesn’t include the price of installing a vent, but it does account for attaching an existing vent pipe or flue to a vented appliance such as a water heater after installation. This raises the price above just having the gas line attached. If any work must be done to prepare the vent, cost will go higher.
  • Access – The more difficult it is to reach the location, such as water heater installation in a crawlspace, the longer it might take – driving up labor costs.
  • Conversion to Propane – The cost of a conversion kit is found below. Add 30 minutes to an hour for labor for converting an appliance’s gas fitting for use with propane.
  • Number of Appliances – Cost might drop by up to 33% for the second and subsequent appliances (picture moving into a home and having a gas dryer, range and free-standing fireplace installed). This is because the plumber of mechanical contractor is already on site, spreading out travel and overhead to more than one appliance.
  • Appliance Removal – Expect to pay $50 to $100 for the removal and disposal of an existing appliance. This might be where you can save a little cash by DIY. Just be sure to shut the gas valve and kill power to the appliance before disconnecting it. If the gas line leading to the appliance does not have a gas shut-off valve (older homes or where corners were cut), code might require the plumber to install one during installation of the appliance. It’s definitely something you want in place.
  • Where you Live – The general cost of living in your area can change pricing by 25% above or below the national average.

Costs to Install Common Appliances

Costs are closely related to the type of appliance you’re having installed. These costs do not include the appliance, since the range is so dramatic. For example, Home Advisor suggests that the cost of range installation when the range is included in the price can be $515 to $7,625. We stick to gas appliance installation costs – and you can shop for the appliance that fits your budget. The site puts the average installation cost at $190 per appliance, a little higher than our range. Thumbtack suggest $125 as an average, which we think is too low when you factor in installation supply costs. Their high end of $326 is more consistent with our estimates.

Permits, Inspection, Related Costs and Installation Time

Permits and Inspection Cost

  • $0 | A permit is not generally required for the installation of a gas appliance if the gas line has already been inspected. If you wish, for safety sake, your gas company might have a program to inspect it for no cost or in the range of $50-$150. Before installing please check with your local ordinances and code to ensure that installation by the homeowner is allowed.

Other Costs and Installation Time

Plumbers charge between $75 and $140 per hour in most locations, with the average being around $100. Homewyse puts plumber rates at $80 to $130.

  • 30 -90 Minutes | Installation of a non-vented appliance, so the gas connection is the only step.
  • 2-4 Hours | Installation of a vented gas appliance such as a vented fireplace, water heater or gas range with vent hood installation.

DIY or Hire a Pro?

If one is handy and a “do it yourself” type of person, American Home Shield breaks down the process in steps to install a non-vented gas appliance.

Step 1: Buy the right connector for your appliance type and that it is the connector is long enough to reach from the gas connection to the appliance.

Step 2: Shut off the gas valve.

Step 3: Wrap the pipe threads with yellow PTFE /Teflon tape and screw it to the gas line.

Step 4: Attach the connector to the gas line.  Be sure to have the connector threads wrapped with the Teflon tape.

Step 5: Use a street elbow, if required (usually included with the appliance) and connect to the gas port.  Once again have the elbow threads wrapped with the tape.

Step 6: Tighten the nuts on both ends of the connector.  DO NOT have Teflon tape on these threads.  It will interfere with the seal.

Step 7: Check for leaks by using a gas leak detector or by spraying the connections with soapy water.

It comes down to experience and what needs to be done when deciding whether to do it yourself or hire a professional plumber.  If a gas line is needed, or if the line does not have a shut-off valve at the appliance connection and you want one installed, a plumber should be hired to do the work.

If a gas line is already run to the appliance location and you’re comfortable with basic plumbing and connections, then this could definitely be a “do it yourself” project.

We  recommend hiring a plumber or mechanical contractor for appliances like a water heater that requiring a vent flue. The professional will choose the right vent material and make sure the connections are leak-proof for safe use.

Finally, it’s a good idea to have all newly installed gas appliances inspected by either a gas company or a licensed plumber, even if you DIY.
